Solar Power Secrets
Your personal guide to solar power at home

Sun-Powered Calculators

Solar mini panels have been in use for decades. The most popular and common use all this time has been for calculators. With as much use as some calculators get, having the solar cells in them saves a lot of money in batteries, especially since most people forget to turn them off when they put them away.

Science fairs have been a staple use for the solar mini panel. Walk into any given fair, and you’ll find at least two or three projects that incorporate them. These days, at least one child will have an exhibit on alternative energy, and solar energy generally takes center stage, with wind and hydroelectricity taking a close second and third.

Hobbyist Applications

A tinkerer will use a solar mini panel on a variety of projects, like self-powered toy cars or helicopters. Imagine your typical hobbyist wiring a solar panel to a light sensor and their Christmas lights. Radio Shack and similar stores have easily a dozen solar-based construction kits available. Not just fun, but they can also serve to teach children about both electricity and solar power.

These small panels have also been incorporated into convenient travel commodities like chargers for phones, MP3 players and other small electronics. Why drain the car’s battery trying to power your charger when the sun can do it for you? Some larger mini panels can even power a small laptop. Just lay the panel out on the dashboard and you’re cooking with real power.

Small Appliances

Speaking of cooking, some mini panels are used for heating food. A small electric range can be plugged into a panel for a quick meal. People who live the lifestyle of the recreational vehicle often have a few panels to power the basic necessities of life. They don’t have a house to just plug anything into. They have to use other resources, and solar energy is a great power and money saver.

For safety a solar mini panel can be installed into back-up lights for when the power goes off. A flashlight that’s been collecting and storing power is a boon during a power outage. If the power goes off during the day, a mini panel can power some of the smaller devices until the electricity comes back on. A mini panel used as a power backup for your computer can give you just enough time to save your work once the lights go out. No more lost data.

A Huge Variety Of Applications

Already, these little panels have been installed into yard lights, security lights, toy cars, radios, yard decorations, mini televisions, flashlights, and other toys and gadgets. Not only great for emergencies, but they also save money by removing the need to buy batteries on a regular basis.

Quaint? Certainly. Useless? Not at all. And as time goes on, we can expect to find more of these solar mini panels gaining more and more applications.
